Individual Coaching

I am an accredited Foundation Executive Coach with the Association for Coaching. I believe coaching can facilitate change in individuals who want to embrace something different in their lives, including those wishing to develop their leadership capability.

My approach to coaching is to provide a confidential safe space to share thinking and I bring a curiosity and a willingness to challenge where this will empower change. Conscious that coaching is not therapy, I do however bring many years of professional experience as a psychiatrist which brings skills of empathic listening and an appreciation of the multi-factorial origin of issues that we experience in our daily lives. I also draw upon my managerial experience of helping others to become more effective as leaders.

I offer an initial free chemistry test session to explore if I am the right person for what you need. I then usually offer an initial course of six online sessions, each lasting approximately 1.5 hours.

Team Development

With many years of senior leadership within the NHS, in both team leadership capacities and as a former medical director, I bring a wealth of experience and interest in supporting team development.

I have a particular respect for the value of multi professional working, given its bedrock in the delivery of good mental health care, and have a firm belief that teams which foster mutual respect are more effective.

My approach to team development involves an initial in-depth understanding of a team’s current working through a mixture of one-to-one discussion and focus groups. I then use a range of other techniques including workshops, surveys and team building exercises to work on jointly-agreed priorities.

Change Management Consultancy

The NHS is almost defined by its constant need for change and, having worked within it for over 30 years, I have always been interested in and leaned towards opportunities to support change at a systemic level.

Since leaving the NHS, I have translated my breadth of experience into providing consultancy to organisations wishing to support their services to respond to ever-changing national or local priorities.

My approach is heavily underpinned by the importance of taking a data-led approach and being crystal clear on the intended outcomes. To this end, I would undertake a diagnostic under agreed terms of reference with the service. I then facilitate sharing these findings in a collaborative, honest way through engagement with a wide range of stakeholders leading to an agreed plan of action with measurable outcomes.

Service-level Investigations

I have experience of delivering bespoke investigations, commissioned by NHS executives – these have focused on areas of particular challenge, such as a whistleblowing complaint or concerns about quality of care within a service.

My approach is to ensure very clear terms of reference and take a nuanced approach to engaging constructively with the service under review. I provide a detailed analysis of findings including co-developing recommendations with the service to enhance the likelihood of real change.
