Individual coaching

A series of individual online coaching sessions with a senior consultant psychiatrist, supported by their Trust. This was their feedback.

I have gained greater clarity and understanding of myself and what motivates me. I am now able to clearly articulate my strengths and areas of development.

Professionally, I have also gained clarity with regard to my medium and long term goals which inform my continuous professional development.

Over all, my experience of coaching has been immensely positive and uplifting.

Jo has a lovely personality, and she is skilled in creating safe spaces as I could share my vulnerabilities without fear. As a black female clinician in middle management seeking to become an executive in the NHS, exposing my vulnerabilities, given my past difficult experiences is quite challenging. Being encouraged to see my strengths in these vulnerable spaces certainly requires considerable skill.

Service level investigations

Nov 2022 - Nov 2023

I undertook two separate service-level investigations commissioned by the Executive of a Mental Health Trust. The executive sponsor of these pieces of work gave this feedback:

Jo has  completed two reviews of  very different services that we had workforce, patient safety and quality concerns about. Jo handled both reviews with compassion for all the staff involved.

She ensured her approach was inclusive of staff at all grades in the multi-disciplinary team and all questioning was completed through a lens of curiosity. She facilitated a safe space for staff to be honest and share their concerns and own perspectives both in groups and on a 1:1 basis..

Jo worked with me and the service leads to ensure the scope of the investigations were agreed and achievable and produced comprehensive reports in a timely manner.

Both reviews and associated recommendations were well received by the teams involved due to Jo’s approach throughout the investigation. Jo’s reccomendations were meaningful to the services and there was buy in from all professions to complete the actions to improve service quality and patient safety.

Change Management

I was clinical lead, working alongside a workforce specialist, for a Mental Health and Community Trust Medical Workforce project.

This was an extensive piece of work taking a data-informed approach, multiple stakeholder engagement and developing a bespoke action plan. On the back of this I was asked to lead a further review of the SAS workforce. Feedback from the Executive medical director who commissioned this work:

Change at system level

Whilst medical director at CNWL I was clinal lead for our Acute care transformation and ambitious Bed management programme. Additionally I was clinical lead for our Mental Health Community Transformation. Feedback from colleagues involved with these programmes:

Jo’s leadership within major transformational programmes in community mental health and in urgent and acute care was absolutely invaluable to their effective implementation, and ultimately their impact on patients. Jo offered her significant clinical expertise, and coupled this with the ability to engage and empower local clinical and operational leaders to take forward ambitious plans, all whilst holding the whole programme to account. Not only a clinical leader, Jo applied strategic thinking and a grip on complexity and realistic ‘deliverability’ to her work on these areas - remaining patient-focussed throughout.
